Frequently asked questions

How the application, registration and learning platform work — and what to expect from a UUMS course week.

Application, registration and payment

How do I apply and register?
Application, registration and payment are all handled online. Once your application has been submitted and you have been accepted to enroll, you may register for upcoming courses through the registration page.
Where do I find the textbooks for my classes?
Textbooks for each class are listed with the term schedule on our academic calendar— select any course to see its required and recommended books, instructor, and prerequisites.
I have taken a class with UUMS before but lost my login.
If you have taken a class with UUMS before, you already created an Orbund login and password. If you have trouble retrieving it, contact Rev. Liesa Chase at revchase@uums.org.
This is my first time enrolling. How do I get access?
You will be contacted with your login information and instructions for accessing your courses.

Our curriculum and expectations

Are classes live or self-paced?
Our courses are mostly asynchronous, with a few classes that require one or more get-togethers by Zoom video conferencing. Those meetings are recorded.
What is an asynchronous course?
Asynchronous courses are those in which students and instructor participate through our learning platform, Coursewebs, during the week. The lectures and assignments are posted. The course week begins on Wednesday. By the end of the week — the following Tuesday evening — students must prepare and submit their response to the weekly discussion and assignment in that class's discussion forum.
What is expected of me each week?
There are generally discussion questions, and students are expected to write substantive answers and post them by the end of the course week. Students are usually also required to post a substantive response to two or three classmates' postings to indicate full participation. Instructors regularly monitor and evaluate the postings and offer weekly comments and suggestions. There is typically a final assignment in each class, and students are notified of their final grades the week following the end of the course.
Can I turn in an assignment late?
Under unique and special circumstances, an instructor may allow a student to post an assignment late. Participation in class discussions and timely submission of assignments are required for successful completion of the course.
